Why You Feel So Good in Costa Rica (It’s Not Just the Views)

There’s a reason Costa Rica feels different.
It’s not just the beaches, the jungle, or the sunsets, even though those help.
It’s something deeper. Something you feel in your body almost immediately…like you can finally breathe again.
And as a nurse, I couldn’t help but notice, there’s actually a real, physical reason for that feeling.
Your body finally slows down

At home, most of us are constantly in “go mode.” Schedules. Notifications. Noise.
Your body stays in a mild state of stress, something called chronic sympathetic activation (your fight-or-flight system), but in Costa Rica, the slower pace, the warmth, the natural environment help activate your parasympathetic nervous system - the part responsible for rest, recovery, and feeling calm.
This is why you feel more relaxed without even trying.
Sunlight changes your mood (literally)

Costa Rica gets consistent, strong sunlight year-round. This matters more than people realize.
Sun exposure helps your body produce Vitamin D and serotonin (your “feel good” neurotransmitter)
Research has shown that increased sunlight exposure is linked to:
improved mood
better sleep
higher energy levels
That “lighter, happier” feeling? It’s not just vacation vibes, it’s literally science.
Nature lowers your stress levels

There’s actual research behind this.
Spending time in nature has been shown to:
lower cortisol (your main stress hormone)
reduce heart rate
improve overall mental clarity
You’re not just visiting nature, you’re in it constantly when you are here and your body notices it and loves it.
The ocean resets your system

There’s something about the ocean that just relaxes you differently, and again, there’s science behind it.
Ocean air is full of negative ions, which have been associated with improved mood, reduced stress, better oxygen flow and other beneficial things. When you add in the rhythmic sounds of the waves, the slower movement and deeper breathing, and your nervous system starts to regulate itself.
You’re more present without realizing it

In Costa Rica, your environment pulls you into the moment. You start to notice sounds, colors, smells. Your brain gets a break from constant stimulation and multitasking and uses it's senses to regulate itself, often without you even realizing. This also helps regulate dopamine (which you get from motivation and reward).
Even the simple things feel better

Fresh food. Slower meals. More movement. These small things support stable blood sugar, lasting energy, and better digestion. It's just more natural for your body and minf, and your body responds quickly to that.
So no, it’s not just the views. Costa Rica feels different because your body is finally getting what it needs: rest, sunshine, nature, new experiences, and space.
If you’re planning a trip (or even just dreaming about one), I put together a free guide with everything I wish I knew before going, from planning tips to how to actually enjoy it without burning yourself out.
Pura Vida!
