Traveling to Costa Rica has been one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences for me. The landscapes are unreal, the wildlife is everywhere, and the culture feels so alive, but I’ve also learned that, like anywhere in the world, there are a few safety things I always keep in mind so I can fully relax and enjoy the trip.
I don’t think travel should feel stressful, but I do think being aware makes everything smoother, safer, and way more enjoyable.
If you’re planning a trip and feeling unsure about where to start or what to expect, I’ve put together a free Costa Rica trip planner that walks you through everything step-by-step—from what to watch out for to how to plan your trip without feeling overwhelmed.

Understanding the Local Environment
One of the things I love most about Costa Rica is how wild and untouched it feels, but that also means you need to stay very aware of your surroundings. Costa Rica is home to a LOT of wildlife, including snakes, insects, and larger animals like monkeys and jaguars. While most animals are not aggressive, it’s essential to respect their space.
When I’m hiking, I personally stick to marked trails. It’s not just about getting lost, it’s also about avoiding unexpected encounters with wildlife. While the wildlife will usually leave you alone, never assume they will
Never feed animals. It might feel tempting in the moment, but it can actually make them more aggressive and dependent on humans, which isn’t good for anyone.

Weather Awareness
The weather is something I’ve learned to be prepared for. When I’ve traveled during rainy season (May to November), I’ve had days where the rain comes out of nowhere and pours.
It's important to stay extra cautious in areas where flash floods or landslides can happen. I have come across unexpected fallen bamboo, rocks and entire creeks washing over what was once a clear road.
On the flip side, even when it’s cloudy, the sun can be really intense. I always seek out a spot I can hang out in the shade when I think I need a break from the sun, or wear a hat and t-shirt for extra coverage.
Personal Safety
Costa Rica has felt very safe to me overall, but I still stay aware in the same way I would anywhere.
I make a point to keep my valuables secure and not carry more than I need. I’ve found that blending in and not drawing attention to expensive items just makes everything easier and more relaxed.
I also try to stay aware of my surroundings, especially in busier areas or when I’m moving between places.
Getting Around
Transportation is something I’ve gotten more comfortable with over time, but I still make intentional choices.
I personally stick with reputable taxis or organized transportation instead of jumping into random rides and if you are taking the bus, keep your belongings close.

Health and Food
I love the food throughout Costa Rica and I don’t hold myself back from trying new places. I’ve eaten at everything from small local sodas to random roadside spots, and even out of the backs of cars at the beach and I’ve personally never had any issues. These small, local spots are some of the tastiest meals I've ever had!
I also drink the tap water in most areas, and it’s always been completely fine for me, but if you prefer you can buy bottled water or bring a personal water filter.

Being Prepared
If I'm travelling alone, I always make sure someone knows where I am and what my general plans are. It just gives me peace of mind.
I also keep copies of important documents like my passport and insurance, because you never know when you will need it.
If you need immediate help, 911 is the Emergency number here.
Police: 911
Ambulance: 911
Fire Department: 911
Easy to remember :)
Respecting the Culture
One thing I really appreciate is how kind and welcoming people are in Costa Rica. I’ve found that even just knowing a few basic Spanish words goes a long way.
Even if you just use, “hola,” “gracias,” and “por favor” whenever you can, it's respectful and I find it opens up more meaningful conversations and genuine interactions.

Final Thoughts
Traveling in Costa Rica can be a safe and rewarding experience if you take the necessary precautions. Staying safe is not just about avoiding danger, it’s about making simple, educated choices that help you to enjoy your trip with more confidence and less stress.
