The ‘best time’ to visit Costa Rica can actually make or break your trip, and this is one of the questions I get asked all the time, and honestly, I always give the same answer. It really depends on the kind of trip you want to have.

If it’s your first trip, my 7-Day Costa Rica Itinerary can also help you decide what season makes the most sense.

Here’s what each season actually feels like (not just what Google says), so you can choose the right one for you.

I’ve travelled around during all different times of the year, and the seasons feel completely different. The dry season might sound like the “best” option as there is minimal to no rain, but it also comes with more crowds and higher prices. The rainy season can be quieter, more affordable, and honestly, just as beautiful in a different way, but comes with more rain.

I feel instead of saying there’s one perfect time to go to Costa Rica I think it’s more helpful to understand what each season actually feels like, so you can decide what kind of experience you’re looking for.

The Seasons (There are two of them)

Costa Rica doesn’t really have four seasons like we’re used to—it’s more about dry season and rainy/wet season.

The dry season runs roughly from December to April, and this is when you’ll get the most consistent sunshine. It’s also the busiest time of year, especially around holidays and spring break, so things tend to feel a bit more crowded and prices are usually higher.

The rainy season, or “green season,” typically runs from May to November. This is when everything feels lush, vibrant, and alive. It does rain, but not always in the way people expect. A lot of the time, you’ll still get beautiful mornings and sunshine, with rain coming down later in the day.

One thing I’ve learned is the Caribbean side has its own weather rhythm. If you’re thinking about Puerto Viejo or that coast, read my full guide on Costa Rica’s Caribbean Coast: Beaches, Food, and What It’s Really Like.

What the Seasons Actually Feel Like

(Not Just Weather)

One thing I didn’t really understand at first is that the seasons don’t just change the weather, they can completely change the feel of your trip and your entire experience.

During the dry season, everything feels easier. Roads are in better condition, it’s easier to get around, and you can pretty much rely on sunshine every day. The thing is it is also much busier in most areas, you need to reserve popular activites ahead of time and it can be more expensive.

The green season feels completely different. Everything is so much more alive. It is so much greener, the jungles are more dense and lush, the swimming holes and waterfalls and fuller, and the whole country just feels slower and more authentic.

Keep in mind too, it doesn't generally rain the entire day like many people assume. A lot of the time, it rains first thing in the morning or late afternoon/evening, which still leaves you with plenty of dry, sunny hours during the day.

One thing that can really influence when you go is what you actually want to experience. I always tell people that sometimes the “best” time to visit isn’t about sunshine, it’s about what you want to see.

If you want to go whale watching or experience the sea turtle nesting, they only happen during certain times of the year, so if that’s something on your bucket list, your travel dates might be based more on that than the weather.

If wildlife is a priority, you may also like my guide on Manuel Antonio Costa Rica: What to Know Before You Book since it’s one of the easiest areas for animal sightings.

My Personal Favorite

Personally, I really love the transition months, especially June and November. The jungle and colours are so vibrant , things are quieter, the beaches feel less crowded, and everything just has a more local, relaxed vibe.

I also like that it’s not as intensely hot as peak dry season. You still get plenty of sun, but the rain usually arrives in the late afternoon or evening, cools everything down and makes it feel refreshing.. Costa Rica is so warm and tropical that even in the rain, it’s still beautiful.

If I had to choose my personal favorite time to visit Costa Rica, I’d have to say it's those in between months. I absolutely love the slower pace, the greener landscapes, and the overall energy. It feels less like you’re in a busy tourist destination and more like you’re actually experiencing Costa Rica.

Who Each Season Is Actually Best For

Honestly, I don’t think one season is better than the other, it really just depends on what you hope to experience on your trip.

If you want everything to be easy, predictable, and sunny every day, the dry season is probably going to feel more comfortable for you. If you’re someone who doesn’t mind a bit of rain and unpredictability and enjoys a quieter, more relaxed experience, the green season can be a great choice.

The rainy season isn’t for everyone. If you want guaranteed sunshine every single day, is coming mainly for surfing, or if you’re planning a shorter trip where weather really matters, then the dry season might be the better fit for you.

What You Can Expect In Rainy Season

That being said, you do have to be prepared for the rain. I’ve had days where it absolutely pours, and if you’re not ready, it can definitely affect your experience.

I learned over time that having a few key things for unexpected rain makes a huge difference. Even something as simple as a waterproof phone case can save you a lot of stress when you’re out exploring.

What I Always Pack for Rainy Season in Costa Rica

If you’re traveling during the green season, these are a few things I personally wouldn’t skip:

These are the kinds of things that don’t seem like a big deal until it suddenly pours and you really need them.

I break this down more in my full Costa Rica Mini Guide if you want a complete checklist.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, I would say there really isn’t one perfect time to visit Costa Rica. It is one of those places that’s beautiful year-round. It really just depends on what you are hoping to experience, so decide what you want to get out of your trip to Costa Rica and then plan accordingly! You've got this.

I'd want to go in the winter months when it's cold and snowy where I live. Probably January or February to be able to escape that dreaded weather for a bit.

But would it be worth it with the busyness and high prices?

You can also do things to keep the costs down like eating at sodas (locals eateries), shopping at the markets, if you're renting a car make sure you know clearly what is included for insurances, etc. I also wrote a post on money saving hacks you can check out!

Is Costa Rica still worth visiting in September or October or is it extra soggy then?

Hey! Lots of people assume September and October are crappy/soggy months to go to CR, but it really does depend where you’re going. Along the Pacific coast it can be very rainy during those months, but the Caribbean side often has some of its best weather around that time, as it has its own seasons. Places like Puerto Viejo can be super sunny and beautiful in Sept/Oct/Nov, so it really depends where you go, but remember even in the rainy months, it can be such an awesome trip if you are just prepared for the rain :)
